DESCRIPTION:There is a well told story in the Talmud of Hillel being brought in from the top of a cold\, snowy roof to be thawed by the hearth of the Beit Midrash\, the house of study. Through this story\, the rabbis imagined that Torah could warm the mind\, the soul\, and the body. The Beit Midrash\, the place where learning happens\, has always been understood as a place that conveys connection and community.\nAs we endure this pandemic in isolation\, I invite you to join our growing community of learners for a monthly Torah study to find the deeper meaning of life’s challenges and a warm connection to community and your Rabbi! CE. It presents a series of ethical principles articulated by the rabbis\, many of which may be familiar to you\, such as “If I am only for myself\, who am I?” and “You are not obligated to complete the work\, but neither are you free to desist from it.”  \nStan will highlight these pearls of wisdom contained within Pirke Avot and participants will have the opportunity to discuss and debate the purpose and relevance of these principles. No prior knowledge needed\, just a willingness to learn. Texts will be provided on Zoom. If you want your own book\, we suggest Pirke Avot: A Modern Commentary on Jewish Ethics\, or Pirke Avot: A Social Justice Commentary.
